Freesat 4k Box Problems

The new Freesat 4K box, a popular choice among viewers looking for high-quality transmission, has recently been under scrutiny. Users have raised concerns about picture quality, with some noting that even on HD channels, the quality isn’t matching their previous experiences on other platforms. Below are some identified problems and potential solutions.

1. Picture Quality Issues

Problem: One user, after connecting the box to a 55” LG C2 OLED and setting the box to 4K picture output, found the picture quality to be lacking. The HD channels, including the BBC, did not measure up to the standard seen on Sky Q. Furthermore, the box’s user menus appeared in low resolution, compounding the quality concerns.

Solution: Adjusting the box’s output settings yielded improvements. When the box was set to 1080p, both menus and channel picture quality improved substantially.

2. Cable and HDMI Port Issues

Problem: For those grappling with a subpar picture quality, questions arose about whether they were using a 4K HDMI lead and if the HDMI port on their TV was set to 4K Deep Colour.

Solution: Ensuring a 4K HDMI lead and setting the HDMI port to the 4K Deep Colour mode might rectify some issues. One user found that toggling the HDMI Deep Colour setting significantly improved the picture quality.

3. Content Upscaling Issues

Problem: There’s a lack of broadcast 4K content in the UK, with most content being either 720P or 1080P. When viewing 1080P content with the Freesat box set to output at 4K, the box itself tries to upscale the content. If the box is set to 1080P, then the TV, like the LG C2, performs the upscaling. The Freesat box’s upscaling capabilities seem to be inferior compared to certain TV models, which could result in diminished picture quality.

Solution: It’s advisable to let the TV handle upscaling. By setting the box to output at 1080P, users can benefit from the superior upscaling capabilities of their TV.

4. Software Fault with Certain Boxes

Problem: There have been complaints about the resolution output on certain boxes. One professional installer observed that, when the box was set to output at 2160p (4K), the menus, text, and images appeared as if they were at 480p. He concluded this was a software fault within the box itself.

Solution: Until a firmware update or fix is released, it’s best to adjust the output resolution to 1080p. It might also be prudent to consider other brands or models if resolution issues persist.

5. Confusion Between Freeview and Freesat

Problem: Some confusion has emerged between Freesat and Freeview boxes. While the issues described predominantly focus on Freesat, it’s important to note that they are two distinct platforms, even if some boxes have similar designs or functionalities.

Solution: Ensure that discussions and troubleshooting focus on the specific platform in question. This helps to avoid conflating issues between the two.

In Conclusion

The Freesat 4K box, despite offering several advantages, has its set of challenges. As with any technology, it’s essential to stay updated, seek advice from knowledgeable communities, and adjust settings based on individual needs. Through collective troubleshooting and feedback, we can hope for more refined solutions and better user experiences in the future.

  1. Since connecting the Freesat 4K TV Box to my LG 32LE4500 (11 years old) TV I have been getting a popup – ‘This function is not available now’ . Can briefly stop it using EXIT button on TV remote but it continues to pop up for about 30 minutes. Everything works as normal behind the popup.
Freesat Help reset the TV box but nothing changed.
