Truma Water Pump Problems

Truma water pumps are an integral component of many caravans, ensuring a steady supply of water for users. However, as with any device, issues can arise, affecting their performance. In this article, we’ll delve into common problems caravan owners encounter with Truma water pumps and offer potential solutions.

1. The Problem

Caravan owners using the Truma Ultraflow system sometimes experience intermittent functioning of the pump. The pump may run briefly, for about five seconds, and then shut off. This issue requires repeated on-and-off switching at the control panel to ensure consistent water flow.

2. Key Observations

  • The pump sometimes runs without drawing water.
  • The problem can arise even if the caravan and setup have been used without issues for years.
  • Physical adjustments to the unit, like tweaking the aligning screw, don’t always rectify the problem.

3. Potential Causes and Solutions

  • Pump Switch: Before diving deep into technical troubleshooting, it’s essential to check the obvious. Ensure that the issue isn’t originating from a simple malfunctioning pump switch.
  • Tarnished Contacts: Over time, the brass contacts on the inlet can tarnish, affecting pump functionality. Double-checking the pump’s wiring into the trigger fitting is essential, as the wiring can fray from regular connection and disconnection. Solution: Clean and, if necessary, remake the wiring connections.
  • Loose Connection Within The Pump: If the pump operates intermittently when wiggled, there might be a loose connection inside. Unfortunately, if the issue lies in the submersible part, it might be challenging to repair, as the unit seems to be sealed. In such cases, a replacement might be the only option.
  • Contact Pins in the Plug Connector: Sometimes, the root of the problem is not the pump itself but the connector. Continuous plugging and unplugging can cause the contact pins to close slightly, leading to intermittent functioning. Solution: Adjust the contact pins using a flat screwdriver and apply a cleaning agent like WD40 on both the plug and socket.
  • Surface Corrosion: Corrosion can build up on the female contacts, affecting the connection. Solution: Use a cleaning solution like ‘Brasso’ with cotton wool buds to remove corrosion. Then, apply WD40 to clean the pins safely, ensuring improved electrical connectivity.
  • Surge Damper Adjustment: Sometimes, the surge damper might require calibration. Solution: Turn the tiny screw on the surge damper clockwise until the pump continues even after turning off the tap. Then, adjust it anticlockwise until the pump shuts off just after closing the tap.

4. Wrapping Up

While Truma water pumps are robust and reliable, occasional hiccups can affect their performance. When faced with such issues, a methodical approach—starting from simple checks and moving to more complex diagnostics—can often pinpoint the problem. If in doubt, it’s always advisable to consult a professional or seek advice from experienced caravan owners. The key is not to give up; sometimes, a simple tweak or clean can restore your pump to its full functionality.
