Browning Maxus 2 Problems
The Browning Maxus 2 is recognized for its versatility, capable of handling a wide variety of shell lengths. However, some users have reported recurring jamming issues, particularly when cycling 2 3/4″ shells through a 3.5″ gun. This problem has raised concerns and led to a search for both the root cause and potential solutions.
The Problem:
The main concern reported is with the 3.5″ version of the Maxus 2. When shooting 2 3/4″ target loads, jams have been observed. The shell appears to get slammed into the side of the barrel, near the ejection port. Specifically, when using Challenger – 7.5 – 1200FPS and Federal – 7.5 – 1200 FPS rounds, users have noted more jams with the Challenger compared to the Federal.
Possible Explanations and Solutions:
- Shell Length Incompatibility: One potential issue is that the gun might be optimized for 3″ or 3.5″ shells and might not handle 2 3/4″ shells as efficiently. However, as per the product specifications, the Maxus 2 should be capable of handling 2 3/4″ shells without any problem.Solution: To test this theory, users can try running a box of 3″ shells through the gun to see if it cycles more reliably.
- Break-In Period: Some believe that the Maxus 2 might require a break-in period, especially with lighter loads.Solution: Users might want to shoot higher brass, around 1400-1500fps, during hunting seasons to see if the performance with low brass improves post a thorough cleaning.
- Spring Tension: The strength of the spring in the Maxus 2 is higher, which might lead to the shell not aligning properly and jamming against the side of the chamber.Solution: Over time, with repeated use, the spring tension might reduce, making it easier for the gun to cycle lighter shells.
- Feed Ramp Issue: If the shell jamming problem is occurring above the feed ramp, on the flat part, a light polish on the feed ramp might help with the smoother transition of shells. However, for more pronounced issues, a gunsmith might need to make more significant modifications.
- Ammo Quality: Not all ammunitions are created equal. The type and quality of the shell can influence how a gun cycles. Softer shells or those with softer casings might not feed as efficiently as harder-shell casings.Solution: Trying different brands and types of ammo can help pinpoint if the issue is specific to certain ammunition. Brands like Winchester AA, which have harder shell casings, might cycle more reliably.
- Mechanical Issues: Some users have reported piston spring cracking or other mechanical problems, which can lead to cycling issues.Solution: Users facing persistent issues should consider consulting with a gunsmith or reaching out to Browning’s customer service, even if there are concerns about the repair duration or the effectiveness of the fixes.
Conclusion:
While the Browning Maxus 2 is a reputed firearm, like all products, it can have its quirks. Understanding the specific nature of the problem is the first step towards finding a solution. Whether the solution lies in a mechanical fix, an adjustment in the ammunition used, or simply a break-in period, it’s essential to approach the problem methodically to ensure the firearm functions safely and reliably.
I have this issue with my Maxus 2 3.5″ chamber as from new. I gave it time to break in and its now shot around 1000 cartridges. Cleaned the gun after every use and it still looks brand new. There is no rhyme or reason and is intermittent but saying that the gun jams quite regularly even using 32g good quality cartridges all 70mm
Sent it back for Browning warranty as the gun is only 3 months old. Returned to me a couple of weeks later with the fault still there despite Browning saying they fired 50 cartridges without any issues. It jammed up on the 3rd cartridge i put in then happened a further 3 times within the next 2 boxes of 27g Hull Superfast i was using on the day. It also jams up when using Eley number 6 32g HV pigeon, Gamebore number 6 clear pigeon, Hull 5.5 Superfast HV pigeon 32g. This gun is supposed to handle these cartridges without issues. In my opinion its rubbish.
