Yamaha Virago 535 Common Problems
The Sudden “Attack” Syndrome
One of the problems a rider faced after purchasing a 1989 Yamaha Virago 535 was the motorcycle’s occasional hesitance to get fuel when accelerating, leading to sudden, unexpected accelerations. This stuttering also affected the bike’s performance at idle, which could be hazardous for both new and experienced riders.
Initial Attempts at Resolution
To address the issue, the owner replaced the spark plugs, installed a new air filter, and cleaned the carbs. However, these solutions did not provide the expected relief.
Expert Suggestions: Fuel System Blockage
One suggestion was that the bike’s fuel system might be clogged – a common issue with older models. Residue, rust, and other debris could block the fuel lines and carb jets.
Steps to Resolve:
- Flush the Fuel System: Clear out the tank, fuel pump, petcock, and the carb. Given the bike’s age, it might also be wise to replace the fuel lines.
- Fuel Filter Check: If the Virago 535 has a fuel filter, replace it. If it doesn’t come with one, consider installing an inline fuel filter which is readily available at auto parts stores.
- Short-Term Solution: Products like SeaFoam can temporarily address the problem. However, for a lasting solution, it’s recommended to go for a full system flush.
Alternative Cleaning Solution: Berryman B12
Another proposed solution was to add Berryman B12 Fuel System Cleaner to a full tank of gas and then ride the bike for approximately 100 miles. This method might help improve the bike’s idling and overall performance.
Note:
It’s essential to monitor the idle RPM. If it increases after using the fuel system cleaner, it indicates that the cleaner is working effectively.
Manual Cleaning of the Carbs
If the above solutions fail to address the problem:
- Access the Carbs: Remove the vacuum caps from the tops of the carbs.
- Clean the Pilot Screws: Unscrew the pilot screws and clean using aerosol carb cleaner. Then, reinstall the pilot screws, turning them all the way in. Given the size of the pilot jet, turn the pilot screws out about 2.5 turns before reinstalling the vacuum cap.
The Reserve Mode Issue
Some riders have found that they need to keep their bike in ‘reserve’ mode all the time, hinting at another potential fuel delivery problem.
Final Thoughts
The Yamaha Virago 535 is a classic motorcycle with a dedicated following. While its age means certain issues are to be expected, with the right care and maintenance, many of these problems can be rectified, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable ride.
